Studio 52cn shoot

CC imaging shoot

There is more to come

It's been a while

So, I have not posted anything in a while because I have been sick and very busy with school. Some things have changed with my modeling though. I am no longer going to be doing the modeling courses with the agncy I spoke of previously. I did not have the money, and after more investigation, didn't like what I found. Many people had commented that the agncy is just in it for money and will  not help you get jobs. I can't afford to take that risk. I should have listed to Tyra when she said no legitamate place will charge!
So it was onward and upward. I created a profile on Model Mayhem.com and set up a few shoots to start ny profile. I will post the pics. I will continue to get shots and try to get jobs as well as looking into other agencies.

My first agency interview

I only had one day to prepare for my interview but that is to be expected in the modeling industry. I decided on an outfit that was fairly plain but had alittle flair to it. I wore darkwash jeans with highheeled boots underneath. I wore a tight black tee shirt with a simple silver necklace. It was cold and rainy so I topped it off with a cute leather jacket.
I made sure to get there early to provide for traffic and also to show them I am punctual. I sat in the waiting area and looked through their books to get familiar with their work. My interviwer then brought me into her office and got aquainted with me, telling me they liked my look and gave her shpeal on the company.
I told her a little about myself and asked some quesitons. I was constantly aware of my face and body position. I wanted to make sure I came across as good listener, conversationalist, and overall nice person. She said I was bubbly which is funny because I worked really hard at it. I have a tendency to come off "harsh" (termed by one of my friends) when I meet new people because I am reserved. The whole time I was thinking "don't be harsh, don't be harsh", so I guess it worked out.
By the end of the interview, she told me she really liked me and wanted me to be a part of their agency. I signed some papers and was on my way. My classes start in December. I'll write about those too!

Preparing for an Interview

In the day before my interview I did some research so I could really put my best foot forward. Here's some things as well as experienced in my interview process.

  • Dress properly: You want to maintain your personality but allow the agency or employer to see your versatility and potential. Wearing a lot of jewelry or accessories will distract from your natural beauty. Wear something that will show your figure but not too much skin. Dressing too sexy might distract the interviewer and also compromise your integrity.
    • For example, wearing a nice pair of jeans and a form fitting shirt with maybe one piece of jewelry would be good. Stay away from shirts with a lot of cleavage and really short skirts.
    • Another thing to consider is wearing a nice pair of heels. You don't want to be tripping or showing off your stripper heels, but sometimes a nice pair of heels makes me stand straighter and feel more confidence. (Not to mention, it will give the booty a little boost).
  • Do your research on the company. It will give you more confidence in knowing what you are walking into and give you a base fore asking questions and making comments. It is very attractive to all companies -modeling and elsewhere- when and interviewee is knowledgeable and can hold an intelligent conversation.
  • Practice some things you might say. You definitely do not want to sound rehearsed or fake but you don't want to get caught off guard. Some things they might ask you are:
    • Why do you want to be a model?
    • Has this always been a passion of yours?
    • What do you think are your best features?
    • What do you do now for work or school?
    • What about modeling attracts you and which part would you like to pursue?
    • Think of some questions you might want to ask too
  • Let your personality shine but also be a listener. They want to get a sense of your personality so it is good to talk and be natural. Try to avoid sitting there nervously nodding. (I have had that tendency) On the other end of that spectrum, you don't want to be overbearing and interrupting. Being an active listener and really taking an interest in what they're saying will really work in your favor. Everyone loves when others listen to them and want to hear more.
  • And remember, you can't win em' all! Do your best and be yourself. If they don't want you, move on and keep improving.

My first experience

My first real experience with modeling came a few weeks back. I was listening to the radio when I heard about a model search hosted by a local agency happening at a mall in CT. I wrote down the info and went home and looked it up. I decided, if nothing else, it would expose me to the modeling world a bit. So I was going.

I showed up there early, as I do for most things. There was already a bunch of people; men women, teens, kids, all lined up and crowded around waiting for the search to start. I was definitely nervous as I filled out my application and looked around an noticed  that this search was taking place right in the middle of the mall.

I surveyed the area and saw a photo shoot-like set up and though -okay we're taking pictures. I looked in the center to see a large runway set up and though - oh no are we walking- in front of everyone? I decided to suck it up and just have fun with it. There were several representatives from NY agencies so it would be fun to walk for them. It felt almost professional.

I got to talking with the people in line around me which helped. It came time for me to walk. We had to go up on the runway where we said our name, height, and why we wanted to be a model. Then we had to pose, walk to the end of the runway, pose, and walk back. I got off and breathed a sigh of relief.

But something inside me really clicked when I realized that I loved it and definitely wanted more. So I left not expecting a callback and was just glad I finally made the jump. But about a week ago I got the call from the agency that had hosted the search and they had picked me as one of 24 from the search and wanted me to go to their office for an interview.

I went to their office the next day and by the end of the interview, the woman said she really liked me and wanted me to be a part of their agency! So now I go for some training classes and when I am done they will start booking me. Usually I would say don't buy into people that make you take classes or anything but after looking into their business, they are legit. So I am really excited and ready to start. I'll write some articles about the stuff they teach. Stay tuned

Before you do anything...!

I found that it was important to do my research in my hopes to become a model. Here's some things you should do before anything else:

  • Research agencies in your area. Take a look at their web pages. See their models and most important; make sure they are legitimate! There are so many scams out there that will ask you to pay for pictures and things that are not necessary or will ask you for too much information. You can check into places by going to the Better Business Bureau website. What I did was search them in google and look for reviews and forums about the place.

  • Look at famous models so you can get some general knowledge on them and see how they model.

  • Learn designers and photographers. Agencies and potential employers like to see you know what you're doing and what you're talking about!

  • PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! It is important to know your body and your face. Practice different emotions in the mirror and on camera. (A face might look awesome in the mirror but crazy in pictures). Try putting your camera on self timer or having a friend or family member take some shots.

  • Practice not only your poses but your personality as well. You only get one chance at a first impression and it is important. For me this was difficult because I am somewhat of a reserved person when meeting new people. My friends have told me I come off "harsh" even though those that know me see me as a kind hearted goofy person. So practice introducing yourself and what your face looks like when your just listening. You might be nervous but you need to put those nerves aside and really let your personality shine!

  • Work on hair and makeup. Looking like a model is half the battle. This might mean trading those sweats for a cute pair of jeans to run errands because you never know who you will meet. It is also obvious that when going to an agency or go see that you look the part. This will also come in handy for many jobs. Especially when you are starting out, there may be many jobs that will require you to do your own hair and makeup and you want to look your best.

  • Think about what your goals are. If your 5'0, you're probably not going to be a runway model as they are usually 5'8 and up. However, there are many other areas of modeling such as beauty (face shots), commercial, catalogue, editorial, high fashion and more.

  • Be prepared for everything. There may be people who say you are beautiful, which every woman is in their own right. But, there will be rejection. You have to keep trying and learning because different places are always looking for different looks and changing. Don't get discouraged if someone doesn't like you or says your body or face is wrong. Beauty comes in many variety. It is up to you to find your niche and work it.

  • And the most important thing to remember is that the person you see in the mirror will make your success!

Welcome!
